An irritant is a substance that can irritate exposed tissue, such as the eyes, skin or airways. Irritation and an allergic reaction are different processes; the terms should not be used interchangeably.
Discussing materials at the property
For a cleaning product, identify its name and review the label and safety data sheet. For an unknown residue, record where it was found and what happened before it appeared. Do not use smell or appearance as proof of the substance's identity.
