National Safety Month: A Property Readiness Checklist

Property care illustration for National Safety Month: A Property Readiness Checklist

June is National Safety Month. Use it as a reminder to review everyday hazards and emergency plans at home or work. The National Safety Council publishes campaign resources and current themes.

Review access and housekeeping

Look for cluttered walkways, loose items and blocked exits. Check that people who use the property know how to leave and where to meet in an emergency. Assign someone to follow up on reported maintenance concerns.

Organize important contacts

Keep emergency contacts, property-manager information and relevant utility contacts accessible. Record who can authorize emergency work and how the building can be accessed after hours.

Check maintenance records

Review the service schedule for alarms, heating equipment and other building systems using the manufacturer's instructions and applicable requirements. Arrange qualified help for work that requires specialized skills or access.

Plan for weather and water concerns

Review roof and drainage maintenance records, known leak locations and previous storm damage. Photograph the current property condition when safe. Discuss any recurring problems before the next severe-weather event.

Keep the plan usable

Choose clear responsibilities and a practical review date. Update the plan after staff changes, renovations or a loss. HTX Elite Build's emergency readiness service can be part of a broader property conversation.
