Soot is fine particulate residue produced by incomplete combustion. The residue left after a fire can vary with the materials burned and the conditions of the fire.
Why the surface matters
A mark on painted drywall, unfinished wood, fabric or an appliance does not call for one universal cleaning method. The assessment should identify the affected material, visible residue and any existing damage before selecting treatment. Ask whether a test area is appropriate before a larger surface is cleaned.
Separate cleaning from repair
Record the rooms affected, belongings of concern and whether firefighting water was present. A proposed scope should explain which materials will be evaluated for cleaning and which require further repair or replacement decisions. Painting a stain and addressing the underlying residue are separate tasks.
