What to Expect When Water Damage Happens

Property care illustration for What to Expect When Water Damage Happens

Water damage can begin with a leaking roof, appliance connection, plumbing problem or severe weather. The first conversation with a restoration team should establish what happened and what can be assessed safely.

Describe the situation

Share when the water appeared, whether the source is still active and which rooms or belongings are affected. Mention any electrical hazards, sewage concerns or visible damage. For immediate danger, leave the area and contact emergency services.

Separate immediate work from repairs

Protective measures, water removal, drying and reconstruction are different parts of recovery. Ask which steps are proposed, how progress will be assessed and when repair decisions can be made. Hidden conditions may change the scope after the initial visit.

Protect project information

Save photographs taken safely, receipts and notes about the loss. Keep your estimate and work authorization together. Ask your insurer about coverage, required documentation and any steps it needs you to take.

Plan around occupancy

Discuss access, noise, equipment placement and rooms that may be unavailable. Tell the team about pets, children, tenants and work schedules so those concerns can be considered when planning the job.
