Open wiring describes a wiring arrangement in which individual conductors are supported separately rather than enclosed together in a cable or raceway. The term is not a diagnosis of the condition of an electrical installation. A damaged wire or an open junction box also needs a specific description.
Why it matters during restoration
Opening a wall or ceiling can reveal wiring that was not visible at the initial visit. Record the location and have a qualified electrician evaluate electrical concerns before cleaning, drying or reconstruction proceeds around them. Do not touch or move exposed wiring.
Keep the repair responsibilities clear
Ask whether the estimate includes electrical assessment, who will perform it and what must happen before finishes are replaced. Photographs and a written finding are more useful than labeling every exposed wire “open wiring.”
