Joist

Parallel wooden floor joists supporting a subfloor in a cutaway.
AI-generated illustration showing parallel wooden floor joists supporting a subfloor in a cutaway.

A joist is a structural framing member commonly used in a series to support a floor or ceiling assembly.

What this means at your property

A leak may affect the finish below a joist before the framing is visible. Opening an approved access area can reveal conditions that change the repair plan. Cosmetic appearance alone does not establish the strength or condition of a framing member.

Can damaged framing simply be covered again?

Ask who will evaluate the member and document the required repair before finishes are closed. Do not cut, notch or remove framing to improve access without the appropriate structural assessment and work plan.
