To absorb is to take liquid into the body of a material, rather than leave it only on the surface.
What this means at your property
An unfinished wood edge can take up water from a wet floor even when the face of the board looks unchanged. The amount retained depends on the material, its finish and the duration of contact. Removing a puddle does not remove all absorbed moisture.
Can a wipe tell me whether the material is dry?
A wipe checks the exposed surface. Ask which parts of the material were measured and whether its concealed side or adjoining layers also need assessment before repairs cover them.
